Some Like It Blue

People have been requesting left and right for me to post directions for my Dalek cupcakes.  Sadly, I didn’t document the entire process as I did for my frost giants, but I can still give you a pretty good description of what takes place by using a mix of the Dalek pictures and the frost giant pictures.  :)

First off, a list of what you will need:

  • 1 package of cake mix (with eggs, water and oil)
  • 3 cans of frosting
  • Package of donut holes
  • Cake rolls
  • Package of mini-marshmallows
  • Food color in the color you desire
  • A couple boxes of candy sticks (the X-Men ones are the best!)
  • Pearl Sprinkles
  • Black decorating icing

Alright!  Now that you have the items required, we can begin!

Prepare the cupcakes as you normally would.  While the cupcakes are cooling, combine two of the three cans of frosting into a large, slender bowl that you can easily dunk a cupcake into. Heat for increments of 20 seconds until the frosting is the consistency of slightly whipped cream. Add blue food coloring and mix. If you need additional color, add until you are pleased with the shade of blue. Keep the third can of frosting separate, but add food coloring to it until it is roughly the same color as the other two.

Spread a thin layer of the blue frosting on top of the cupcakes and attach a thin slice of the cake roll in the center. Dab blue frosting on top of the cake roll, and place the donut hole on top.  Place assembled cupcakes in the freezer until frozen.

Dip cupcakes one at a time into the blue frosting just up to the liner. Allow excess frosting to drip off. Carefully invert cupcake and place on cookie sheet. Repeat with the remaining cupcakes. Reheat frosting in the microwave for several seconds, stirring well, when consistency becomes too thick.

Now to begin the fun but time consuming part — decorating!

Take the pearl sprinkles and push them into the icing in rows of three.  Spread them out evenly until the lower half of your Dalek is completely covered.  The candy sticks will need to be broken into portions to be used as light bulbs (two on top of head), eyestick (one in center of head), gun stick (one small in center of body) and manipulation arm (longer arm with “plunger”).  Once divided properly, stick a marshmallow on the end of the manipulation arm, and half a marshmallow on the end of the eyestick.  You can roll in black decorating gel to get that classic “plunger” look.

Use a pointed tool to puncture the cupcake where you’d like to insert the candy sticks.  I use a shish-kabob stick.  Insert candy sticks into the holes.  Once you are done adding any finishing touches and readjust the candy sticks, freeze! Once they’re done freezing, you should have an army of perfect Dalek cupcakes!
