Some Like It Blue

As promised, directions on how to make your very own frost giant cupcakes! May I warn you that this process takes what seems like an eternity to complete, so if you aren’t patient, you won’t want to try.  Now. To begin.

What you’ll need: 1 box of cake mix, eggs, oil, 3 cans of frosting (NOT the whipped kind), lots of blue food coloring, pack of 24 donut holes, 12 large marshmallows cut in half, toothpicks, and tubes of black, red and green cake decorating gel. You’ll also need enough freezer space to house all of the cupcakes.

To start, make two dozen cupcakes as you usually would. While the cupcakes are cooling, combine two of the three cans of frosting into a large, slender bowl that you can easily dunk a cupcake into. Heat for increments of 20 seconds until the frosting is the consistency of slightly whipped cream. Add blue food coloring and mix. If you need additional color, add until you are pleased with the shade of blue. Keep the third can of frosting separate, but add food coloring to it until it is roughly the same color as the other two.

Spread a thin layer of the blue frosting on top of the cupcakes and attach the marshmallow half in the center. Dab blue frosting on top of the marshmallow, and place the donut hole on top. Spread additional blue frosting along the sides of the marshmallow and donut hole to fill gaps and secure. Place assembled cupcakes in the freezer until slightly frozen.

Dip cupcakes one at a time into the blue frosting just up to the liner. Allow excess frosting to drip off. Carefully invert cupcake and place on cookie sheet. Repeat with the remaining cupcakes. Reheat frosting in the microwave for several seconds, stirring well, when consistency becomes too thick.

Freeze again, letting the frosting harden. Once it has hardened, you can begin the fun part — decorating! ^_^ Use the black, red and green cake decorating gels to doodle eyes, lips, jade armor, eyebrows, etc. I use a toothpick to draw in the small details and etch the scars. Use a toothpick to dab blue frosting in the place of nose and ears. Then, take the toothpick and add a little blue frosting to the end for a spear head. Shove it down deep into the cupcake to secure. Repeat with remaining cupcakes, and don’t be afraid to switch it up from frost giant to frost giant. And there you go — A Jotun cupcake army!
